Lexar’s Professional Go Portable SSD with Hub could be an iPhone filmmaker’s dream, offering the benefits of externally recorded footage in a very compact package.
Apple’s introduction of USB-C in the iPhone 15 Pro line was accompanied by the ability to record 60fps 4K Pro Res video to an external storage device. While users can connect an external SSD to their iPhone, it usually involves a cable, which can get in the way of recording.
Storage producer Lexar has come up with its own solution to the problem, in the form of the Professional Go Portable SSD with Hub.
The concept is made up of two components. First there’s the Lexar Professional Go Portable SSD, a compact drive measuring a mere 1.71 inches by 0.98 inches by 0.32 inches. Equipped with a USB-C plug, it can be inserted straight into the base of the iPhone 15 Pro models for direct recording.
Using adapters, the drive can also be located behind the iPhone, minimizing space and getting out of the way while the user works.
Offered in 1TB and 2TB capacities, the SSD has fast file transfer speeds, at up to 1,000MB/s for writes and 1,050MB/s for reads under optimal conditions.
The other vital component is the Hub, a USB-C expansion dock. Measuring 2.71 inches by 1.71 inches by 0.32 inches, it is designed to have the SSD plug directly into it, with the entire package being about the same width as the iPhone.
The intention is that the Hub could be plugged into place using one of the included rigid USB-C connectors to the base of the iPhone, but again hidden around the rear. This helps reduce the number of visible wires, resulting in a cleaner iPhone videography setup.
The Hub has a total of four USB Type-C connectors. One is for connecting to the iPhone or computers, two are for SSDs and accessories, and one is for a power source.
When using a suitable power bank, the Hub can provide up to 30W of power delivery to the iPhone.
On its own, the SSD is 0.8 ounces, with the Hub adding another 0.46 ounces to the assembly.
Lexar is making its Professional Go Portable SSD with Hub available via Kickstarter, in packages starting from $129 for the 1TB drive or $159 when combined with the Hub. The funding period runs until August 31, but it has already far exceeded its financial goal by a considerable margin.
